Frequently Asked Questions About Our Drum Lessons

What age can my child start drum lessons?

+

We recommend starting drum lessons at age 6, though some students can start as young as 5. Since drums are a very physical instrument, students need to have sufficient manual dexterity to handle the sticks and coordinate movements.

What equipment do I need to practice at home?

+

To start, we recommend getting a practice pad and a set of sticks, which we sell at the school (though you're not required to buy from us). If you want a full drum set, we often recommend starting with an electronic kit because it's compact and can be used with headphones, making it more neighbor-friendly.

Should I get an acoustic or electronic drum set?

+

This often depends on your living situation. If you're in an apartment or have space constraints, an electronic kit is usually the better choice as it's quieter and more compact. While most drum teachers prefer acoustic kits for their authentic feel, electronic kits are a practical solution for home practice. You can also modify acoustic kits with mesh heads and quiet cymbals like we do in lessons to reduce noise.

How are the lessons structured?

+

Lessons typically focus on rudiments (the building blocks of drumming) and gradually incorporate different components of the drum kit. Students learn to coordinate their hands and feet, eventually working up to playing all parts of the kit simultaneously. Teachers will also have students play along with recordings and often play alongside students using our dual drum kit setup.

Do I need a drum set for my first lesson?

+

No, you don't need a drum set for your first lesson, as we have both acoustic and electronic kits available in our practice rooms. However, having something to practice on at home (even just a practice pad) is essential for making progress between lessons.
