What People Say About Violin Lessons at WCMA
"West Coast Music Academy is wonderful. Miss Joy Yi, in particular, is my favorite because she is not only great with teaching music (she teaches the cello, violin, and viola) in a knowledgeable way, but also teaches her lessons in an engaging way. Because of this, my daughter loves going to her lessons. She talks about how awesome, funny, and nice Miss Joy is. My daughter has also improved in her skills for the violin! Thank you Miss Joy!" —Leslie C.
"My son has been taking violin classes here for about 6 months and he loves his teacher, Michael. He is patient and understanding with our son. He has greatly improved since starting his lessons." —Heather L.
"My daughter has attended this wonderful music school for over 5 years and has thrived in her violin playing skill. The teachers are very friendly and nurturing. They are also very accommodating with rescheduling classes when we had to miss it. Hours are great too being open late and works well since most kids go after school. The recitals are always a special event and well orchestrated. The school truly pushes you to give your best. Highly recommended for all music loving families. Two thumbs up!" —Jenna C.
Frequently Asked Questions About Our Violin Lessons
What age can my child start beginner violin lessons?
We typically recommend starting beginner violin lessons at age 5, though we've had students as young as 4. The violin is particularly well-suited for young beginners as it comes in many different sizes to accommodate children's growth.
Do I need a violin for my first lesson?
No, you don't need a violin for your first lesson. In fact, we recommend waiting until after your first lesson so your violin teacher can provide guidance on selecting the right size instrument. Many teachers start with fundamentals and may even use a practice violin (made of cardboard) to teach proper form and movement.
How do I know what size violin to get?
Violin sizing is based on both the child's height and arm length. We strongly recommend going to a violin shop to get properly measured rather than ordering online. For growing students, renting is often the better option as they will likely need different sizes as they grow.
Should I buy or rent a violin?
We recommend renting from a reputable violin shop, especially for beginners and growing children. This ensures you get a quality instrument that's properly sized, and you can easily upgrade as needed. We caution against purchasing inexpensive violins online, as they often fall apart quickly and can be difficult to play.
Do you offer group or ensemble opportunities?
While we don't currently offer formal ensemble programs, students may have opportunities to perform together at our recitals. Our violin instructors focus is on developing strong individual skills through private instruction. Students of all ages can participate in our Musical Ladder system to help them achieve their goals!
